Monday May 5th May Day Bank Holiday Monday - traditionally this means a change to the usual TV schedule, so no Cheggers this week, which is replaced by a special edition of Multi-Coloured Swap Shop at 5 pm called The Multi-Coloured Music Show. (Why not Multi-Colured Pop Shop?) This compilation of performances included The Buggles, The Selecter and Sad Cafe. London, 7.23 pm: Two SAS teams storm the Iranian Embassy in South Kensington under the codename Operation Nimrod, in order to rescue the hostages held by a group of six terrorists from Khuzestan. The raid lasted seventeen minutes and resulted in six fatalities. 19 of the 20 remaining hostages were rescued, though two sustained serious injuries during the assault. Only one of the terrorists survived. Features a sketch where Pamela Stephenson interviews Billy Connolly in the guise of Janet Street-Porter. Is this the first time they met? Thursday May 8th Marvel UK publishes the first edition of a new title called Forces in Combat. Promoting itself as “Britain’s greatest new adventure comic!” it’s a strange mix of styles and genres, with soldiers, cowboys, kung-fu, sci-fi and even a reprint of an old British strip from the 1950s called Wulf the Briton. A bit like 1979’s Tornado, but with no original writing. I am sufficiently engaged by it for a couple of weeks (possibly because there’s no 2000 AD - see below), but the idea of it’s much better than the execution. Look-in No 20 Star Wars Weekly No 116 Spectacular Spider-Man Weekly No 375 Starburst No 22 Frantic No 4 - this one had an amazing front cover I loved to death. Doctor Who Weekly No 31 - features an article about Doctor Who’s new producer, John Nathan-Turner, with photos from the first bits of location filming for the upcoming series. Also, on the Gallifrey Guardian news page, an announcement about the Doctor’s new companion, Adric, who will be introduced in a story called The Wasting: “Filming is now apace.” What they don’t say is that actor Matthew Waterhouse, who plays Adric, is a massive Doctor Who fan and previously had a letter published in this very magazine. Incredible Hulk Weekly No 63 - the last edition of Hulk Comic before it merges with Spider-Man Weekly. Now almost entirely American reprints, only Black Knight remains as a reminder of the comic’s early lofty ideals. The end of Dez Skinn’s Marvel Revolution. BBC 1, 7.20 pm: Top of the Pops - presented by Peter Powell • Part 1 (Mystic Merlin, The Human League, Johnny Logan - note this is The Human League’s first appearance on Top of the Pops and, although they’re doing a cover of a song from the early seventies, it finally feels like the eighties have arrived) • Platinum Blonde Prelude • Midnite Dynamos Matchbox (note this is the same performance from TOTP, but repeated on another pop show) • Let’s Go Round Again Average White Band (via Legs & Co) • You’ll Always Find Me in the Kitchen at Parties Jona Lewie • Part 4 (Boney M, The Ruts, OMD) • Part 5 (The Undertones, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Hot Chocolate) Saturday May 10th No 2000 AD! For the next five weeks, publisher IPC is hit by industrial action, as detailed in this extract from Thrill Power Overload by David Bishop. In response to the strike, the comic is very nearly discontinued for good, but somehow it survives to return on June 7th.
